Edit Localized String

The Edit Localized String dialog appear when you click the >> button that appears to the right of a localized text field in one of the attribute panes. It allows you to view and edit the translations of the text string in question in one place, rather than having to change the project's UI language in the main toolbar.

Note: See Attributes panes for a general introduction to localizable text fields.

Dialog fields and options

This dialog box contains the following fields and options.

Attribute Description
String name This field displays the internal string name. In most cases, this is the name that appears on the corresponding attribute pane, but not always. It is also used in the translations text file that is written by the Export Translations... command. This field is for information only and cannot be edited.
Default text Enter the default text for the string. The default text is used for any languages that do not have a specific translation, and for all languages if the string is not localized at all.
Localized

Check this box to localize the text string. Localizable strings do not have to be localized; in many cases, strings that may be localized in principle are not localized in practice. (For example, file names may be localized, but most are not.) If this box is cleared, the string will not have any translations and always uses the Default text instead. The * button to the right of the text field on its attributes pane performs the same function.

If this box is cleared, the remaining fields in the dialog are disabled (grayed out).

Never localize

Check this box to indicate that the text string must not be localized. This applies to some localizable strings that must remain identical across all languages.

Warning: This is an advanced feature. Do not change this setting unless you understand the implications.

Check localization Check this box to indicate that the string should be localized. If this box is checked, then InstallMate will perform additional preflight checks on the localized string and report any missing translations. If the box is cleared, missing translations will be silently ignored and the Default text is used instead without any further warning.
Translations Shows all currently defined translations for the string. You can add, remove, and edit translations to this list by using the buttons at the bottom of the dialog box.
Language Select the language for the currently selected translation. This is a drop-down list that contains all currently defined project languages. You can add or remove languages from the list on the Languages project page.
Translation Enter the translated text for the currently selected language.
New Click this button to add a new language for translation to the string. You must then select its language from the Language drop-down list and enter the corresponding translated text in the Translation field.
Remove Click this button to remove the currently selected translation from the string.
>> Default Click this button to copy the currently selected translation to the Default text field. From then on, that text will be used for missing languages.
