Parent folder does not exist on 95/98/Me

The parent folder of the indicated file or shortcut does not exist on Windows 95, 98, and Me systems. As a result, the file may not be installed correctly or not installed at all. This warning is given because the the indicated file is indicated for installation on Windows 95, 98, or Me, so this may cause the installation as a whole to fail.

Background information

Some predefined folders are platform-specific and may not exist or be supported on all target platforms. InstallMate tries to detect these situations by the use of folder traits. If you try to install a file or shortcut in the folder anyway, the resulting error may cause the installation to be aborted.

Solution

There are two ways to resolve this problem: make sure that the file in question is not installed on Windows 95, 98, and Me, or install the file in a different folder.

A. Do not install the file on Windows 95, 98, and Me

If the file in question does not apply to Windows 95, 98, or Me (as its installation folder seems to imply), then make sure that the file isn't marked for installation on those platforms. You can do so as follows:

  1. Find the component that controls the file's installation. The easiest way is to right-click on the file and choose Go to Component.
  2. If the file is not controlled by a component, then create a new component for the file, as follows:
    1. Right-click on the file and choose Assign to Component.
    2. In the Select Component dialog box that appears, click New component and give the new component a meaningful name.
    3. Click Select to assign the file to the newly created component.
    4. Go to the new component by right-clicking on the file and choosing Go to Component.
    5. Link the new component to at least one Feature by dragging the new component to a suitable feature and dropping it there.
  3. Assuming that the file's component is selected, click on the Platforms... button in the Component attributes pane.
  4. In the Select Installation Platforms dialog box that appears, clear the boxes for Windows 95, 98, and Me. Then click OK to close the dialog box and rebuild your project.

B. Install the file in a different folder

If the file in question must be installed on Windows 95, 98, or Me systems, then move it to a different folder that is available on those platforms. You can use drag & drop to move the file to a different folder on the Files and folders page.
